Have you ever found yourself, in those moments of self-reflection, wondering how you’re doing – if you’re “cutting the mustard” when it comes to your Christian walk? According to the hymnist, we humans are “prone to wander”- don’t you sometimes wonder if you’ve gone off-course at all? It would be nice to have someone sit us down and give us an honest and gracious evaluation of what we’re doing right, what we’re doing wrong, why we should stop doing wrong, and why we should start doing right. Or maybe we wouldn’t want that . . . maybe we wouldn’t want someone else telling us what to do.
Whether they wanted it or not, the church at Ephesus received that very kind of evaluation – not from some well-meaning but limited human being, but from Christ Himself! And He definitely had some things to say to them.
This Sunday we’ll be digging into Christ’s letter to the church at Ephesus, found in Revelation 2:1-7 . Read over it, read it again, and then read it a third time (hey, its really short!). Take note of what Christ commends the church on, and what He has against them. Look at how Christ is portrayed at the beginning of the letter, and try to get a feel for His tone. Look at what He calls the Ephesian church to do.
Also – Matt mentioned the book “The Returning King” as a great tool for our study on Revelation, and you can access a free online version of it. If you like the feel of a book in your hands, you can order it here.
