Christ’s letter to the church in Thyatira (Rev. 2:18-29) is rich with Truth and application. To be perfectly honest, I’m not sure exactly on which of the major issues we’ll focus (for you grammatically inclined types, did you notice the deft avoidance of the dangling participle in this sentence?). I’ll outline a few of the main themes of the letter, as I see them, and give you a few things to think about. I’d encourage everyone to really spend some prayerful time contemplating Jesus’ words to the Thyatirans.
- Consider how Jesus presents Himself here. I put forward that He is appealing to His authority and judgment. With this underlying understanding, how does this play into the rest of the letter? How does it affect the interpretation of what He gives to those who overcome (vs. 26-27). (Also, for extra credit, see Ps. 2).
- If you watched the church in Thyatira for a while, what sort of a church do you think you’d see?
- How does this letter address what the Church today tolerates within itself? What does Kossuth tolerate? What do you tolerate in your own life? Does this admonition address tolerance outside the Church? How are we to handle the evil things of the world?
- What is the significance (if any) of vs. 20 & 24 in light of Acts 15:22-29?
- What does it look like to “hold fast” (vs. 25)
I’m really looking forward to our time together on Sunday morning. I think if we all prayerfully mediate on this amazing letter, we’ll see a great depth of knowledge and wisdom in this revelation of the Lord Jesus. Grace & Peace.
On a side note, I listened to a great sermon on this passage that I highly recommend. You can get it here.
