The prostitute, a marriage, and warrior Jesus

I’d be quite the hypocrite if I didn’t post to the blog during the week I’m teaching since I give our normal teachers such a hard time when they don’t. So here is a little to think about this week as you prepare along with me for Sunday’s lesson.

We’ll be looking at Revelation 19. The chapter starts off with the rejoicing at the destruction of the great prostitute, Babylon, that Tom taught about in chapters 17 and 18 last week. Next the story moves onto the marriage supper of the Lamb. The marriage where Jesus Christ is made one with his bride, the church. Finally, Jesus makes his triumphant entry on a white horse.

As I’ve been reading this week I’ve been most struck by the amazing similarities between the evil “actors” in this story and the heavenly ones. Reading the descriptions of each, they are on the surface almost identical. But when you dive in you can really see that the two sides couldn’t be more different.

This is probably most dramatic in the description of Jesus on the white horse. Is this the image of Jesus that you have today? Probably not. If it were, wouldn’t you respond differently to just about everything?

Here are some resources that I used to prepare.

Google Image Search for “jesus”. Does Google find any Rev 19 images of Jesus?
