The husband of one wife

Last week we looked at the qualifications of an elder. This week we will look further at what is probably the most debated qualification, “the husband of one wife”. This phrase from both 1 Timothy and Titus is only a few words. Despite it’s brevity (or possibly because of it), I’ve found in preparing for this Sunday that it has been interpreted to speak to many different issues and contextualized in many different ways.

We’ll look at some of the common views, what issues it doesn’t address, and where our church lands on many of the issues that are raised. There’s a lot we could potentially cover. Come prepared with your questions. Just to get your brain started, you might have questions that fall into categories like gender roles, divorce, and being single as it relates to the qualifications of elders.

I’m still working on cleaning up my notes. I’ll update this post with a link to them in the next day or so.

Here are my notes
