Doctrine: Revelation

“Christianity is . . . a religion that rests on revelation: nobody would know the truth about God, or be able to relate to him in a personal way, had not God first acted to make himself known.”  (J. I. Packer)

Our previous discussion began from the foundational premise that God has revealed himself to us.  We zeroed in on the Holy Bible as the primary means of that revelation.  Taking a step back, though, several other questions pop out of the woodwork:

  1. Has God revealed himself to us in any other ways besides the Bible?
  2. If so, what are those ways?
  3. What specifically has been revealed about God through those other avenues?
  4. Can man come to know God from those other avenues alone?
  5. How does sin affect mankind’s ability to receive revelation?
  6. How do these other avenues of revelation relate to evangelism?

Consider these to be teaser questions for Sunday’s discussion.  Our goal is two-fold: 1) to gain a broader understanding of the spectrum of God’s revelation, and 2) to walk away with a deeper appreciation of how this doctrine affects our faith and practice.  See you on Sunday!

Ben
