In John 1:1-3 & 14, the apostle uses “the WORD” as a description of Jesus Christ.  Before he “opens the Christmas present” of the WORD becoming flesh in verse 14, he gives some characteristics of that gift we have been given in Christ.

As John points out:

- the WORD is eternal from the beginning (vs 1a, John 17:5, Micah 5:2)

- the WORD has been with God from the beginning in an intimate “eyeball-to-eyeball” relationship (vs 1b)

- the WORD was God from the beginning (vs 1c)

- the WORD was God’s instrument of creation (vs 3, Gen 1, Col 1:16, Heb 1:2)

- the WORD became flesh and set aside his deity to come as a baby (vs 14a, Phil 2:5-8)

- the WORD (eternal, with God, is God, creator) dwelt among us! (vs 14b)

 When we think about Christmas and the baby in a manger, let’s not forget that the baby we see is the eternal God, creator of all things, our Savior (John 1:29) and will someday be the Judge and King of the new earth (Rev 19:11ff)

Praise God for His Christmas gift of “the WORD”, our Lord & Savior, Jesus Christ!

Wow, here I am – in the blog world for the very first time and all on dial-up! My patience and sanity are nearly gone.

As we approach the Christmas season, we are taking a break from our studies in Revelation and I am going to do the next three weeks discussing something related to Christmas. Right now there are several things rolling around in my head to discuss in class. Recently, I have been wondering about how God worked at preparing His chosen people for the coming Messiah. So, I am thinking about looking at some passages showing how Christ was revealed in the Old Testament, or looking at some of the prophecies concerning the Coming King. I am also looking at “the Christmas Story” from a passage other than Luke. Hopefully, by Sunday I will have settled on something to kick off this short series to prepare us for celebrating the birth of our Savior.
